On my way home from Charlotte last night, at about 1:30 AM, I stopped for gas and made an embarrassing mistake. The fuel cap for the TSX is supposed to have a plastic tether to keep it with the fuel door, but mine was cut for some reason by a previous owner. I always set the cap where the windshield and trunk meet. Well, last night, I forgot to put the cap back on. I didn’t get a warning message until, oh, 50 miles later. (Fortunately, it’s just a message that says “tighten fuel cap” and not an actual CEL like older Hondas.) I pull off at the next exit and, sure enough, no fuel cap. I got home and looked up the part number, and the cap is the same as 2008-2017 Accords and some Civics, so instead of driving to the other side of Richmond to the Acura dealer I could just go to the Honda dealer near my house. (Local junkyards don’t have cars that are 10 years old or less, so that was out.) When I woke up this morning I called them to see if they had it in stock. I said it was for a 2009 Accord 4-door with a 4-cylinder and a manual.

Pictured: a 2009 Accord sedan with a 4-cylinder. But not a manual, because Japan.

They had it in stock, so I went and bought it. Saw some new Accords, which look quite decent with the black grille but not so much with the chrome one. The warning message is gone and I’m going back to bed.

You couldn’t have just walked around the parking lot, found another Honda and borrowed his gas cap?

New Hondas have capless filler systems

Did they realize their owners kept leaving the caps between the windshield and the trunk?

And if the older Accords are like mine, they have the fuel door lock with the car doors.

But you’re just borrowing it for a little.

(I hope my overtone of sarcasm is apparent)

My 4Runner has a cap off of a Volvo 240. It’s the only part of that car that isn’t a tin can now.

One of the tricks I use as a Parts Guy is to obtain Acura, Lexus, Infiniti, etc part number and call the more plentiful (and usually CHEAPER) Honda, Toyota, Nissan etc dealer. A lot of times they use the same part number, or can get it, and its easier to deal with them versus the highline places that only have a few stores in the area.

One time I ordered Isuzu Rodeo parts from my Honda guy, and he got mad at me for not giving him a Honda VIN... I was like “Where ELSE am I gonna call??”

True! But it can be tough to convey context and tone online sometimes.

Yeah, I’ve done that before. I think it was maybe a dollar difference if I’d gone to the Acura dealer, but 30 miles each direction vs. 3 to Honda was a much bigger factor. And there are two other Honda dealers in between.
